Saixiang Governor's Remains Monument

Introduce

The Stone Gate Ancient Battlefield, named for its historical significance in the Mudan Incident, later, during the Japanese colonial period, in 1935, to commemorate the meritorious service of Japanese Lieutenant General Nishio Toshitaro in the Taiwan Expedition, the monument was inscribed with the words "Nishio Governor's Relic Memorial." After Japan surrendered and withdrew from Taiwan following World War II, the first county magistrate of Pingtung County at the time believed that the inscription was an insult to the national style, so in 1953, it was changed to a monument to commemorate the resistance against Japan, with the inscription changed to "Clarify the seas and return our rivers and mountains," honoring the great spirit of the indigenous people who fought to the death.

Subsequently, in order to restore historical relics and the historical significance of that time, the inscription was restored to its original "Nishio Governor's Relic Memorial" in 2020.

Adjacent to the monument is the "Stone Gate Loyalty Monument," also known as the "Monument to the Loyal Souls who Died in the Expedition Against the Indigenous Peoples." It commemorates the 547 Japanese soldiers who died in the Mudan Incident. The original monument was damaged, and only the base remains, which was relocated here in recent years.
