Shihmen Historical Battlefield

Introduce

Entering County Hwy 199 in Mudan Township, you will see the magnificent Shimen Gorge. The Shimen Gorge is located between two opposing peaks and is called "macacukes" in the Paiwan language, meaning mutual support and resistance against external aggression. This is the ancient battlefield where the indigenous people of Mudan and Gaoshifo tribes resisted the invasion of the Japanese army, known as the "Mudan Incident".

In the year 1874, Japan invaded Taiwan under the pretext of the "Ryukyu Drifters Incident" and engaged in fierce warfare with the Paiwan indigenous people. In the "Battle of Shimen", Aruqu, the leader of Mudan tribe, his son, and other indigenous warriors fought bravely but unfortunately sacrificed their lives. Several days later, the Japanese army launched another powerful attack, dividing into three routes to attack Mudan and Gaoshifo tribes. The indigenous people fled into the mountains. As the Japanese soldiers were not accustomed to the local environment and began to fall sickness, the two sides negotiated a ceasefire, thus ending the war.

This place carries an important historical event that changed the fate of Taiwan. Let's recall the critical moment of the "Mudansha Incident" together.
