  • Entering County Hwy 199 in Mudan Township, you will see the magnificent Shimen Gorge. The Shimen Gorge is located between two opposing peaks and is called "macacukes" in the Paiwan language, meaning mutual support and resistance against external aggression. This is the ancient battlefield where the indigenous people of Mudan and Gaoshifo tribes resisted the invasion of the Japanese army, known as the "Mudan Incident".

In the year 1874, Japan invaded Taiwan under the pretext of the "Ryukyu Drifters Incident" and engaged in fierce warfare with the Paiwan indigenous people. In the "Battle of Shimen", Aruqu, the leader of Mudan tribe, his son, and other indigenous warriors fought bravely but unfortunately sacrificed their lives. Several days later, the Japanese army launched another powerful attack, dividing into three routes to attack Mudan and Gaoshifo tribes. The indigenous people fled into the mountains. As the Japanese soldiers were not accustomed to the local environment and began to fall sickness, the two sides negotiated a ceasefire, thus ending the war.

This place carries an important historical event that changed the fate of Taiwan. Let's recall the critical moment of the "Mudansha Incident" together.

  • The Mudan Incident occurred in the year 1874 when Japanese immigrants, who had drifted to Ryukyu, were accidentally killed. In response, Japan dispatched forces to Taiwan, leading to intense conflicts with the local indigenous people. To commemorate this significant event in modern Taiwanese history and honor the brave struggles of the indigenous people at that time, a 12-hectare memorial park was established near the Shihmen Ancient Battlefield. Strolling through the park, visitors can gain a profound understanding of the entire incident through historical story walls, sculptures of Aruqu, the leader of Mudan Society, and his son, as well as the Monument of Love and Peace.

  • The Anshuo tribe in Daren Township was formerly known as Alang Yi Valley, and the journey from Xuhai to Anshuo was called the " Alang Yi Trail", while in the Xuhai area at the eastern end of Pingtung, it was called the "Longkiauw Puynam Trail". This road stretched along the Pacific Ocean coast, and it was an important passageway for the migration of different ethnic groups to and from the mountainous areas and for trade and commerce activities in the early days.
This section of the road is located on one of the few coastlines in Taiwan that is not yet accessible by highway. Currently designated as the " Xuhai Guanyinbi Nature Reserve", it retains its pristine ecological environment and is rich in flora and fauna. There are many steep slopes along the way, and some of them are equipped with rope aids and simple treks, but you still have to gauge your own physical abilities.
The area has an amazingly pristine coastal landscape. Walking along the 8-kilometer-long ancient pathway that runs alongside the mountains and the sea, you can see rare plants such as bamboo cypress and Hengchun Fukumo, as well as conservation animals such as green sea turtles and coconut crabs.
Let's follow the guide's wonderful explanation and enjoy the pristine natural beauty, explore the biodiversity, and experience the magnificent coastal scenery!
Entry is subject to authorization and is limited to 300 persons per day, the whole journey takes about half a day.

  • The "Graves of Fifty-four Ryukyuans" is built to commemorate fifty-four Ryukyuans who tragically lost their lives. The graves are surrounded by stone walls, and the tombstones are made of granite, engraved with the words "Graves of Fifty-four Ryukyuans."

The story dates back to the year 1871 when a Ryukyuan ship returning from Shuri to Miyako Island drifted to the Yayou Bay area due to a typhoon. Of the 69 crew members, 3 drowned, and the remaining crew members wandered to Takasufotsu, where the Paiwan people warmly welcomed and assisted them. However, due to language barriers and cultural differences, the crew members, feeling fearful, left without notifying the Paiwan people. Suspecting the crew members of ill intentions and fearing future pirate attacks, the Paiwan people decided to pursue them, leading to the killing of the 54 Ryukyuans. This incident sparked the Peinan Incident.

After Japan surrendered and withdrew from Taiwan following World War II, the first county magistrate of Pingtung County at the time believed that the inscription was an insult to the national style, so in 1953, it was changed to a monument to commemorate the resistance against Japan, with the inscription changed to "Clarify the seas and return our rivers and mountains," honoring the great spirit of the indigenous people who fought to the death.

Subsequently, in order to restore historical relics and the historical significance of that time, the inscription was restored to its original "Nishio Governor's Relic Memorial" in 2020.

Adjacent to the monument is the "Stone Gate Loyalty Monument," also known as the "Monument to the Loyal Souls who Died in the Expedition Against the Indigenous Peoples." It commemorates the 547 Japanese soldiers who died in the Mudan Incident. The original monument was damaged, and only the base remains, which was relocated here in recent years.
